BAY STORE

ABOUT BAY STORE

In the summer of 2021, James Quinaz built a collection of furniture using only objects found in Biscayne Bay and the Miami River as materials. For nine months, the BAY STORE collection was on exhibit in the Miami Design District’s Paradise Plaza.

20% of all proceeds from sold work benefitted ARTSail and Blue Scholars Initiative - organizations connecting the South Florida community to Biscayne Bay through art projects and science education, respectively.

More about BAY STORE

Using only materials sourced from Biscayne Bay and the Miami River, artist/designer James Quinaz transforms trash into treasure for BAY STORE. Part exhibition, part performance, BAY STORE invites you to watch the design process as Quinaz navigates the detritus in our waterways to produce thoughtful, functional furniture before your eyes. By using refuse, BAY STORE asks the viewer to consider the cost of excess and reckon with a society that litters its priceless natural landscapes with cheap plastics, foams, and other harmful waste.

The problems facing Biscayne Bay are serious and go far beyond plastic pollution. Storm-water runoff, septic tank failure, and more contribute to seagrass, coral, and fish kills every day. While Biscayne Bay faces an unquestionably critical tipping point, Quinaz takes an optimistic stance. By driving an authentic connection between the waste in the bay and our modern way of life, BAY STORE calls on the viewer to see themselves as a potential collaborator, to care for something bigger than any one of us, and to imagine a future where we’ve restored Biscayne Bay to its full glory - repurposing one piece of rubbish at a time.
