About The Sidewalk Series

Sidewalks are the literal and figurative foundation of a life in the city. In The Sidewalk Series, James Quinaz chronicles the Miami walkways he once frequented by reimagining them as solid wood low tables. After 3D-scanning segments of sidewalk, Quinaz has the renderings carved into live-edge slabs with milling machines and joined to legs cut from the same single piece of wood.

Inspired by Japanese design that both emulates and elevates natural structures, The Sidewalk Series instead takes urban structures as its subject. The engraved images function as an act of preservation, impressions of our humanity. And while the milling machine technically creates a duplicate of the pavement, the intentionally low-resolution replica doesn’t attempt to conceal the technology involved. Instead, Quinaz calls attention to the imperfections of the scanning and printing process - like high-tech wabi-sabi.

Each resulting table tells a unique urban story that marries the elegance of exotic Guanacaste wood with the overlooked simplicity of the ground beneath our feet.
